We will hit some team hard: Sanjay Bangar

Kings XI Punjab are languishing at the bottom of the table and their hopes of a playoff berth are over. It is tough to understand how a side that was runners up last season, is now finding itself in no man’s land. The big names have failed to fire and have not received enough support from the Indian contingent as well. Kings XI coach, Sanjay Bangar reasoned lack of winning momentum as one of the reasons for the side’s string of losses in the tournament. “We are badly in need of some momentum and I could attribute the losses to one reason, which is momentum,” Bangar said. “We didn’t really enjoy that at the start of the tournament and maybe that is one of the reasons why the performances have been inconsistent.

“It is very difficult to pinpoint reasons for the losses. You look at the preparation of the players and the confidence level and their mindsets. You try and monitor that and it has been pretty consistent. Ultimately the line between success and failure is very slim. There have been occasions wherein decision making under pressure has been found wanting. Probably that could be the reason for inconsistencies.”

But, ahead of them are four matches which Bangar believed the side will play with their heads held high. “We will try and reach our own internal targets as far as execution is concerned in all three departments of the game. We are also trying to keep the confidence levels up in the team,” Bangar said. “It is about sticking to those things time and again, and we want that turnaround to happen. I must admit it is very difficult to regroup. But there is a lot to play for – pride being one of the things that we have discussed.”

He also hinted at his side spoiling a few parties for the teams at the top. “We have been quiet so far and we are bound to hurt some team in a big way. I expect that to happen sooner rather than later wherein we will hit some team pretty badly.”

The Kings XI next face Kolkata Knight Riders in their backyard and according to Bangar the side was upbeat about the contest in hand. “I think we have a good mix of players who can play spin well and also the pace bowling. If you look at our batting lineup, there are three or four quality players of spin bowling. It is not only Indian batsmen who play spin well in our side. Remember when we played KKR in the final last year, we scored 200 runs, which not many opponents have scored against Kolkata. We are well aware of that and we are looking forward with anticipation for tomorrow’s game.

“KKR has been a very consistent team led well by their captain Gautam Gambhir. They are banking a lot on their bowling which has been a very good mix of spinners and fast bowlers. We are well aware of their strengths; they have got a good position in the points table. All is going really well for them, but having said that we are going to hit some team badly and who knows it could be them tomorrow.”
